From the artist (about the piece "Oh Say"):

This print is only tangentially about Vietnam. It was from my college years after the service. Many college years. Elapsed time was nine years including a three year break when I worked in a paper mill, a nursing home, lived in my future wife's $40/month apartment in Traverse City, and spent the Bicentennial summer traveling the West.

In August of 1969, I joined the Marines with roughly three goals: prove myself, qualify for the G.I. Bill and wrest Vietnam from Communist tyranny. I was 18 years old. After the heat and the humping, booby traps and mines, snipers, fire fights, night watches and fatigue, I refined my goals to one: forget about it, it don't mean nothing. I wasn't going to sweat the small stuff. After all, any number of times I was a dead man. Nothing could be worse than 'Nam. Car problems, no money, bad weather, whatever.

So I went to college, three different schools, majored in journalism first, then art. Never drew anything before, never had training. This print was done during a stone lithography class I took. I loved it. It was like magic: printing from a flat surface; the separation of oil and water on the limestone; transferring an image to the sheet. When you're done, etch the stone clean. Start fresh.
