From 1965-66, I was stationed at a secret air base in Indochina. My job was security. I guarded pilots, jet fighter bombers, helicopters, information, money, ordinance, myself as well as other GIs and the "host country" personnel.

What seems to mostly appear in my "war images" are feelings and ideas about the absurdity of war, the perplexing "beauty and beast" of war, the "good guys" and the "bad guys" of war.

The paradoxical "aesthetics of war" as represented in the phenomenology of the pictorial and sculptural components of the machines of destruction, the fire of consuption, the evidence of death and devastation profoundly fascinate and puzzle me.

I do not believe that war is the way to solve human problems. The cost of human life is too high. The social and political exchange between adversaries is the only humane way to resolve conflict.
