From an interview:

Vietnam altered the way I viewed the world. It was then that I began to feel an urgency to somehow capture things like historical events and their relationship to one another. I can only do this in my own terms.

From a letter to his mother:

You wouldn't believe how hot it is over here. I guess I am lucky to work in air conditioning, but where I do my work is like a small cubicle – cold and dark. I know you are worried but it's ok because my job is in a pretty secure area. Sometimes we take shelling, but not too often.

Developing pictures can be interesting and boring. It seems like they photograph the whole country every day, than at night they fly all we have done out of here and each day we start over. I guess the worst part is the boredom, that gets to all the guys.

The Vietnamese people are gentle. It seems like they want the war to stop but are used to living with what's going on. This country is beautiful, it makes me sick to think of the damage war does to the land and to all people but that's how it goes.
