From the Artist:
From a letter, 1996:
When I returned to the World, I thought I'd leave Vietnam behind and go on with my life, untouched by the events of the past. By the time I realized that Vietnam could never be left behind, that it was as much a part of me as my brain and heart, that it directed my soul as much as my organs directed my body, it was too late to talk about it. Words caught in my throat and welled in my eyes. Of necessity writing and painting became my voice.
Most of us were young and inexperienced when we joined the different services and were sent to Vietnam. We wanted so much to hold onto that youthful innocence, despite the war. It was of course, a losing battle, but one we thought worth fighting.
