In Afghanistan, I conducted convoys, shut in a heavy metal box with bulletproof windows. I thought the armored walls would keep Afghanistan out and keep [me] separate from who I was becoming...Afghanistan, like it or not, had become a part of me. The sights, sounds and fears...would continue to find their way over, under, and through my conscious amnesia.
