Charlie Company was known unaffectionately as Combustion Charlie due to its propensity to set itself on fire whenever stopped in one spot longer than six hours.

On March 5, 1969, my squad was point on a battalion operation near the Cambodian border when we walked into an ambush set up by the NVA. We lost three men, including my platoon leader, and suffered eight wounded, including myself. I was shot three times with wounds serious enough to send me to Fizsimmons General Army Hospital in Denver for nine months. I was retired on 60% disability in Dec. 1969.
